It’s that time of year, when the Christmas home tours are hopping and inspiration is abounding on the web for holiday decorating! Truth be told, I’m not much for holiday decorating, Christmas is the biggest one I decorate for but besides that, I just have a hard time getting into it. I thought it would be fun to see what I’ve done in the past in this house so I made a little collage of past mantels and trees.
The odd years seem to be a struggle so that might explain this year as well. Honestly, I think last year was my favorite one so far although I did love my ornament wreath before it fell apart.
This year, we purchased a “kid” tree for the front living room and made the one in the family room the “mom” tree. I love all the kids crafted ornaments and colorful balls but this year I was feeling a serene, metallic look. At first I had mom guilt over this but then I polled my friends on facebook and apparently kid trees are pretty common so I’m feeling a little less guilty now.
I’m still not sure about the accent wall. Don’t be shocked if it’s gone in January. I like how it makes the fireplace pop but I don’t love how it makes the room feel smaller and kind of choppy or something.
For the first time in my married life I purchased a tree skirt. My mom made us one our first year of marriage in 1998 so I think it’s time for something different. I found this pretty silver and gold one at Target. Right now it kind of blends into the carpeting but eventually we’ll have hardwood floors in here and I think it will look beautiful against the floor.
I moved the stockings my mom knit for us out into the entryway and hung them off the banister. Definitely not pinterest worthy and the cord is showing but I’m ok with that, it’s good enough for me.
Just using stuff from the dollar store I added some fun touches to the dining room chandelier. I like to keep it simple and cheap.
For anyone who doesn’t enjoy decorating for the holidays, I hope you find some joy in making your home work for YOU. Don’t worry about what pinterest, your mom, in-laws, friend who loves to decorate for Christmas or even bloggers tell you about decorating for Christmas. Do what you like in your home. Decorate as little or as much as you want If you love purple, decorate with purple, or santas or whatever else you like. Happy Holiday decorating my friends!
