If you follow me on instagram or facebook, you may have noticed that I started painting my kitchen cabinets last week. Last Sunday we hauled the Christmas tree out of the basement which led to rearranging the living room which led to painting over the patched area on the living room wall which led me to paint the fireplace tile which I decided should be the same gray as my lower kitchen cabinets.
I figured if I had the cabinet paint out, why not touch up a few spots in the kitchen? After I saw that the paint on the cabinets were I touched up was a tad lighter, then I noticed how green/gray the tile looked and how the walls in the living room were going to need a new paint job soon, I decided well if I have to paint the bottom cabinets again, why not go either a more true gray or just good old white? I was feeling a little boxed in with the gray/green color choice at this point and I don’t like feeling boxed in. Then I thought, why not sand down some areas that have drips or just don’t look good so that the cabinets are perfect? Good idea in theory on a Monday morning when the world seems sunny and bright and it feels like you have all the time in the world.
Well folks, after three hours of sanding and days of painting the bottom cabinets white, I have a problem. The upper cabinets and lower cabinets are not the same white. I used Rustoleum cabinet transformations on the upper which was a fail so I painted over that with the ACE Cabinet and trim paint. The lower cabinets I didn’t use Rustoleum, I went with primer and ACE Cabinet and trim paint. The bond coat from Rustoleum made the white a little more creamier (or yellow) as the oldest daughter said. Now do I abandon the white idea, go get some charcoal paint and call it a day? Or add 2 layers of bond coat and 2 layers of ACE over the 6 layers of paint already on my lower cabinets? UGH! My dining room and living room have looked like a cabinet factory for the past few days and I’m hosting Thanksgiving dinner here so it would be nice to have a space for us to cook and also sit down and enjoy our meal. I am also painting my window above the fireplace, along with another window, dining room kitchen and living room for a client/friend this week because you know, I like to paint. HA!
This morning I am loving the brightness of my kitchen even without the cabinet doors on. I’m really leaning hard towards the white on the bottom even knowing all the work ahead to get the look. Although it still is really up for debate.
