Last fall we joined in the One Room Challenge and created a Sexy Master Bedroom. One year later and we still love it!
This fall I decided it was time for our sad vanilla bathroom to join the bedroom and become all sexy and beautiful too. So I jumped into the One Room Challenge again. At first we didn’t plan to go this big with it but it just snowballed and now we are SO glad we went with it!
The biggest thing we changed in the room was the tile floor. I fell in love with the Porcelain tiles in 12×24 at Lowes. I had some money on gift cards that I was going to use for the bathroom and the tile itself only came to $105 which is fairly cheap in a smaller space. It was tricky trying to figure out a pattern that we liked but eventually we did and we both LOVE this floor tile! Seriously my photos do not do it justice.
For the vanity, I repainted with Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams which is also the wall color in the bathroom and the accent wall in our master bedroom.
The were from home depot and I spray painted them gold for a total of about $37 or so. I spray painted our previous mirror gold last year and while it was ok, water spots were not coming off and it was looking kind of junky. When I was wondering the aisles of Hobby Lobby I found two beautiful mirrors that I loved and thought would be perfect for the bathroom. I originally wasn’t going to buy it but at 50% off, I couldn’t pass it up so it as Happy Birthday to me! I’m so glad I went with this mirror, it really stands out in the bathroom and is something besides a boring rectangular mirror.
At first we weren’t going to replace the vanity top but then we found a basic white one at a builders outlet for $125. Either the walls in our house aren’t straight or the counter top was not straight but either way, the hubby said we needed a back splash to help make it not so wonky. The is from Lowes and was suprisingly very reasonably priced at $6.50 for 8 tiles. When we added in the on top was when it got a little pricey at $5 a piece. We are both still really glad we did the back splash as it adds a lot to the room and let’s the faucet stand out.
I purchased the in Polished Brass from Home Depot for $100 using a gift card. It’s a great faucet and I would totally buy it again!
Again, we originally weren’t going to change out the light fixture but after purchasing the mirror, the light just looked funny in there. After much debate, I finally settled on the from Amazon. This light has given me a bit of trouble but hopefully it will all soon be made right when the new light arrives by December 1st. One of the arms/posts that the light comes down on is missing a crucial piece and is quite noticeable up close.
I had to reorder this light and it’s taking a while for it to arrive. I still love the light and will hopefully love it even more when it’s the way it should be.
The ekby shelves are from IKEA, I spray painted the metal ends in a chrome finish, they were orignally a dull nickel finish.
Most of my shelving decor is from Hobby Lobby or TJ Maxx/Homegoods. The cool gold vase is a birthday present from my friend Elizabeth who knows me well and thought it would go well in my bathroom.
When shopping for decor the other week, I found these cool wooden and gold hooks. I wasn’t sure if they’d work against the dark wall but I knew if I didn’t buy them right then, they would be gone. I’m so glad I hung onto them as they work perfectly with the art. Speaking of art, this awesome canvas is from Homegoods and I purchased it last year for the Sexy Master Bedroom. We named her Monique because we are weird and felt like she needed a name.
I knew it would be perfect in the bathroom so right now this little corner of the bedroom wall is empty. There is a similar canvas painting floating around and if I find it again, I’ll buy it for this spot.
The gold wire basket was also a Homegoods find, only $16 and I LOVE it! The white towels are from some home stagings I did, they look much better rolled up in a basket than wasting away in my closet. Just a little touch of gold and a soft flokati rug on the floor was all I needed to bring it all together!
Probably the simplest item in the room but one that I think it just perfect is the shower curtain. I found it at shopping with my friend Jen for the day up in Minneapolis. Of course I had to use a 20% off coupon to bring the price down to $47.
I mean paying almost $60 for this seemed a little ridiculous but it was exactly what I wanted so I really didn’t have much choice. We also purchased a new shower rod because the one we had looked like it was from 1980 and purchased at the dollar store. Homegoods had a lovely chrome one for only $15 which I thought was a steal.
Finally, the picture frame moulding knocked this room up about 10 notches and it’s all thanks to my hubby! Total we paid about $40 for the trim which is so cheap for how much of a WOW factor it brings to the room. He has become a master at installing this stuff after we first put it in our entryway and has installed it at quite a few friends’ houses as well.
None of this would have been possible without my husband and his amazing DIY skills. He installed the tile floor and back splash, the counter top, the light fixture, the shelves and the moulding. He scraped popcorn ceiling, held artwork on the wall for me while I tried to figure out what to hang where, went for a quick trip up to IKEA in Minneapolis one evening for shelving, stayed up way too late tiling, redid the floor tile after the layout somehow got messed up and put up with all my crazy ideas! I’m so thankful for all his hard work and patience with me, this was definitely a labor of love and we are so happy to have an amazing bathroom that now matches our bedroom! I still smile every time I walk into my bathroom and can’t believe it’s really mine!
The grand total is probably around $800, minus about $300 in gift cards. I definitely didn’t plan on spending this much in here but when I try and think of what I would eliminate, I just can’t think of anything that I could without changing the whole look of the bathroom. It’s definitely come a long way in four years and I feel like our house is losing the builder grade oak/beige look it had when we purchased it.
I think that just about covers it, if there’s something I missed and you want to know more about it, shoot me a message, I would be glad to answer any questions! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get back to enjoying my bath!

That is such a pretty room I would sleep in the tub! I love all of it. I love porcelain tiles they are so strong and the color is all the way through. Amazing room.
Thank you Sue! I have been tempted to sleep in that tub.
