The first time I had Stromboli was when I was dating my hubby. This is one of his favorite recipes and our kids love it too! My mother-in-law made this for most birthday parties or gatherings. So this is her recipe I am sharing today.
Ingredients for the filling:
16oz pizza cheese (not mozzarella but pizza cheese)
small package pepperoni
1/4 lb deli ham
1 can or jar of pizza sauce
Ingredients for the crust:
1 package quick rise yeast
3/4 c milk
1/4 c oil
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
4 c flour
In a large bowl mix 1 package yeast with 1/2 c warm water. Add 3/4 c warm milk, 1/4 c oil, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp sugar and 4 c of flour. Spoon and knead together until a ball of dough forms. I use my hands, it works the best but do whatever works for you.
Leave the dough in the bowl and cover with a dish towel for 15-20 minutes or until the dough rises. Cut the dough ball in 1/2 and roll out each 1/2 to make 2 stromboli crusts. Here is one crust rolled out, it is kind of irregular shaped but that’s ok.
Cut up small package pepperoni by cutting the pepperoni into quarters, deli ham in small squares and then add 16oz pizza cheese and mix together. Add some parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic salt or whatever other seasonings you like and mix together. For this batch I doubled my recipe so I have more ingredients than what the above recipe calls for. And no, my pepperoni is not moldy, that’s the parmesan chese.
Spread 1/2 of pepperoni/cheese mixture down the middle of one dough, then use the other half of your mixture for the other dough.
Fold up first one side of the dough by bringing it to the middle and then the other side will rest on top of the first fold.
I make sure it is a tight fold and the ingredients are all nice and snug inside.
Now you are going to fold up the ends, you may need to wet your finger with a bit of water and rub the water on the dough to help it stick shut, you can also do this for the seem in the middle.
This is how the Stromboli roll should look after you have it all folded up. You will then transfer over to a baking sheet and place it seam side down.
Now bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden on top.
I didn’t get a picture of the loaves right out of the oven, maybe next time.
Slice and serve.
Topping with pizza sauce makes a nice moist addition to the stromboli, otherwise I find it can be a bit dry.
****** You can also add other ingredients like italian sausage, black olives, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, pineapple, peppers, chicken and broccoli, a reuben style, ham and swiss, whatever you love!
One word: YUM!
One of our favorites!! Hmmm…now I”m re-thinking dinner tonight!

Yum, I can’t wait to make this Ange! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Yum! I have to try this with a gluten free dough I make.
That looks so tasty!! Am I the only one that doesn’t know what ‘pizza cheese’ is??
If you are in a hurry, you can make this with the frozen bread dough. Just roll out and stuff as in above directions., I think it’s called Bridgeport, or something like that.
